Breast Implant Revision and Breast Lift

Over the years, innovations in the types of implants used as well as the medical technique involved in reshaping the breast have made breast surgery safer than before.

Breast Implant Revision

A breast implant revision is a surgery intended to correct inconsistencies, mistakes, or other unsatisfactory results of an initial breast implant surgery. Whether it’s because of the presence of lumps, imbalance between the two breasts, deflation of one or both of the implants or wanting to reduce the size of the implants, breast implant revision is an option for patients who are dissatisfied with the results of a prior breast implant surgery.

During a breast implant revision, a cosmetic surgeon will make an incision around the areola or under the armpit to access the implant. Depending on the result the patient wants to achieve, the surgeon will either remove the implants completely or replace them with new implants which may differ in size or type from the original implants.

Some women opt to have smaller implants put in, a procedure called breast implant reduction surgery. Should you decide to have new implants put in, the consensus is that saline-filled silicone implants are the safest. If something goes wrong and should the implant start to leak, saline can be safely absorbed by the body.

The placement of the implant is also an important consideration. Some doctors argue that positioning the implant underneath the muscle in the chest is the safest technique as it prevents the tissue around the implant from hardening. This is a decision you should make with your doctor prior to the surgery.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Patients report feeling a small degree of pain and soreness that usually subsides after a week or two. Patients who elect to have new implants may feel tightness and discomfort around the implant area. Depending on your whether or not you choose to have replacement implants inserted, a breast implant revision can cost anywhere from $4000 to $6000 .

Breast Lift Surgery

Sometimes referred to as mastopexy, a breast lift is a cosmetic procedure intended to firm and lift sagging breasts that occur as a result of the loss of skin elasticity during aging. During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision, removes some of the unnecessary sagging skin under the breast, and moves the areola to a slightly higher position. The extraction of loose skin makes the breasts appear firmer and fuller. The incision is then closed with stitches which will be removed in about a week or two.

The surgery is also performed under general anaesthesia. On average, a breast lift costs about $5000. Patients choosing to have implants during the surgery will pay approximately $1000 more.

Risks of Breast Surgery

Whether you elect to have a breast implant revision or lift, the risks are very similar. With the use of general anesthesia, there is always the risk of having an adverse reaction. Infection is also a concern anytime an incision is made during surgery. Along with the common risks that coincide with any type of surgery, breast surgery carries its own unique risks including asymmetry, infection caused by implants, and lessened sensitivity around the breast area as well as a slight chance that your ability to breastfeed will be impaired. As with any surgery, talk to your doctor about the potential risks and side effects before undergoing a breast implant revision or breast lift.
