Love handles? No thanks. How about a small, slender waist instead? Well, you’re in luck. Another opportunity has come into the market to help slim those love handles down. The LipoSonix System is a new way to non-invasively reduce the size of your waist.
Approved by the FDA last September and acquired by Medicis, the LipoSonix system focuses high-intensity ultrasound (HIFU) technology on areas of the stomach and sides, permanently eliminating targeted fat underneath the skin, all without the hassle of surgery.
Jonah Shacknai, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Medicis Pharmaceutical Corporation, notes that the procedure may benefit adults who want to shave several centimeters off their waistlines.
How Does LipoSonix Work?
The ultrasound waves are intensified and focused (suitably called high intensity focused ultrasound ñ HIFU), heating up tissue and thermally ablating it. Other uses for HIFU have included treating uterine fibroids, prostate tumors, and atrial fibrillation. And now, it has the power to ablate subcutaneous fat, leading to a slimmer waist. The fat is permanently eliminated in a non-invasive way.
During the procedure, the head of the LipoSonix sytem is positioned on the appropriate area. The ultrasound energy is directed towards the targeted fat, without damaging any skin on the surface. The fat tissue is naturally processed and eliminated over eight to twelve weeks. The result? A waistline that is more contoured and slender.
What Makes LipoSonix Unique From Other Treatments?
LipoSonix is different because the ultrasound energy penetrates deep into the surface and targets the fat tissue beneath, all without damaging skin or other tissues, whereas other procedures such as radio-frequency or laser focus low-intensity energy that is reflected or absorbed only by the skin tissue on the surface.
With technology that uses high-energy and frequency at specific depths, LipoSonix focuses ultrasound waves that permanently eliminate fat in the love handles and abdomen. It is also distinctive from other treatments because the procedure only lasts approximately one hour.
Is LipoSonix Right For You?
Diet and exercise don’t seem to get you enough results? You may be a good candidate for LipoSonix if you are near your ideal size, but want to get rid of some additional fat around your waistline.
Requirements for candidates:
• Overall good health
• Body mass index (BMI) equal to or under thirty
• Have the ability to pinch an inch (or 2.5 cm) of fat in the appropriate area to be treated
• Have to have realistic and reasonable expectations
In a clinical study, 91% of surveyed patients reported improvement after just one LipoSonix treatment. There was an average of 2.5 cm in reduction of waistline, or about one pants or dress size down , with results usually seen in eight to twelve weeks. Keep in mind, however, that office visit times and personal results may vary.
What Are The Side Effects from LipoSonix?
During the procedure, side effects may include minor discomfort, warm or cold temperature and tingling or prickling. Anesthesia is unnecessary during treatment. Afterwards, patients may feel slight discomfort, swelling, redness, or bruising in the area that was treated.
Keep in mind that LipoSonix does not replace liposuction surgery, or losing weight by leading a healthy lifestyle. It is only to eliminate that inch of fat that diet and exercise just can’t seem to get rid of.
Currently available in Japan, the European Union and Canada, it is marketed by Medicis (which also manages Dysport and Restylane). They anticipate the launch of LipoSonix in the United States soon.
